Montreal

This is the first public version of the "Montreal Metropolitan Area" board. It features 48 "countries" (cities or municipalities) and 8 "continents" (metropolitan areas or regions). The boundaries loosely follow the actual municipal boundaries; however, many smaller towns were merged. The bridges shown on the map are real (though I had to remove a few bridges to make the map playable). It is a good map for beginners looking for something simple, or for evil luxers who crave for a short but violent game. The map has been fairly balanced through extensive testing with both humans and bots.

THE STORY
The year is 2000... and a nasty civil war is brewing in the Montreal Metropolitan Area. After an unsuccessful referendums on city mergers, a bunch of crazy gun-toting mayors and city councellors went on a rampage. It didn't take very long for this to escalate into a full-scale nuclear conflict. Chateauguay was nuked. So was L'Assomption. Nobody gived a damn. Half of the bridges went down after being hit by explosive-packed beluga whales trained by a secret terrorist group named 'Free Laval or Die Trying'. Mohawk indians decided to reconquer their homeland. In the end, people were fighting with their bare hands for control of the metropolitan region (well, at least, the remaining non-radioactive parts).

- Unify Montreal and fulfill mayor Tremblay's crazy dreams of "One island, one city"!
- Reunify half of the south shore into the Greater Longueuil, a super suburban megapolis filled with malls, boulevards, parking lots and video rental stores!
- Try to defend the Laurentides region, yeah, try it... with the *huge* Mirabel airport in your backyard, you're heading for trouble!
- And finally, you can also play the ever pissed-off Mohawks, who can (almost magically) smuggle armies between their two reserves!
They seek not only her wealth but to overthrow Athenian democracy. The threat of Spartan oligarchy divides the tribes - this will be as much an ideological struggle as one for power.

War rages, but while the legendary Spartan army is unbeatable on land they are outnumbered and outclassed at sea by the Athenian navy. For almost three decades battles are fought throughout Greece and her allied nations with neither side gaining great advantage.

It is 404 BC and war's end comes late for Greece - it's cities are in ruins and people lawless. With the Classical era over it seems now Greece's greatest enemy had always lay within.

It is 490 BC and King Darius 1st of Persia has finally crushed the rebellion against his empire. Now his gaze falls on Greece. For six long years this rabble has aided the usurpers and even now remains defiant. A show of power is in order he thinks, both to rid his court of lingering dissent and to ensure no Greek dares question Persia again. Darius dispatches his armies - their mission: to turn Greek cites to dust, to slay all who raise sword or shield against his will and to enslave the rest. This will be Darius's subjugation of Greece.

It is September and Darius's fleet land on a beach near the city of Marathon. If the army’s size wasn't cause for alarm the trail of destruction in its wake surely was, having already turned the Aegean Sea red and raised Eritrea. Athens, aided by a small force of Plataeans march to meet the invaders on the Plain of Marathon, blocking passages to Boatia and Athens. But the Persians are in no rush and the Athenian roadblock remains unchallenged. For days these 10,000 Greeks endure a stalemate, facing an enemy well over twice their number, an imbalance they hope the arrival of Spartans will help address. But that day never comes.

Grossly outnumbered, devoid of cavalry and possessing but a fraction of the enemy’s missile troops, inexplicably the Greeks decide to attack. The invaders are surprised to say the least, not only that a Greek offensive was ordered, but that as Persian bows fill the air the Athenians break into a sprint, a move no Greek army had used until that day. Surprise turns to horror as Athenian phalanxes tear into the Persian front line, and with the clamor of that maddened impact so begins the Battle of Marathon.
With Babylon now in reach it angers him that the port city Tyre remains defiant. Little wonder, its watery perch is some 900 yards from land, rimmed by 150-foot high walls. It is a sea-locked garrison seemingly impervious to assault.

Professing to have had visions of victory at Tyre Alexander announces he will take the city, a move not widely applauded. Indeed, his plan is so ambitious it verges on the absurd. He proposes to bring the land to Tyre.

The undertaking is immense, not only must his army build a mole across sea to the very walls of Tyre, but it's steep fortification demands use of giant siege engines, a size never before built.

The Tyrians are amused by the Macedonian’s labor - surely this army’s commander must be insane. They besiege the mole and dispatch fire ships to torch the half-built siege engines.

But Alexander is relentless. Days become weeks, weeks months and as the land edges closer to the city and new siege engines are unveiled the magnitude of his vision becomes all too real.

After WWII the European Union was created to encourage cooperation and peace on the continent, and for the next 200 years the peoples of Europe lived together as one. But the project that started out as a coal and steel union soon became too bloated and bureaucratic, and some nations refused to comply with EU regulations. Other member-states took offence to this and imposed sanctions and blockades.

As the EU slowly crumbled, new alliances were formed. Sweden joined the Scandinavian and Baltic states and created the Nordic Alliance, while Germany joined its closest neighbours to form a Central power. France, Spain, Portugal and Italy joined forces in the West, while the Balkan states, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova formed an alliance in the East. Russia reconnected with some of its former satellites while Britain remained true to its isle and joined Ireland.

Tension between the different alliances was on the rise and war finally broke out when the Central Alliance invaded and reclaimed Kaliningrad. The rest of Europe began their own wars of conquest and so the peace was broken...

What was once a quiet corner of the galaxy has erupted into all-out intergalactic war!

The humans of Earth and the Martians had been grappling for control of the Inner Planets for over a decade.

The huge planets of the outer system unexpectedly dropped their "gassy" cloak and revealed huge military regimes determined to conquer the entire Solar System.

Who will rule the Milky Way?!

THE HOT GATES

It is 480 BC when the armies of Persia descend on Greece. A comparatively small force of Greeks march to meet the invaders at Thermopylae and The Hot Gates where the only road into Greece narrows sharply between cliffs, choking an armies advance. It is Ideal terrain for the Greek’s phalanx, and for three days they use the advantage of the gates to repel wave after wave of Persian assault. Hope is dashed though when the Greek traitor Ephialtes leads the Persians to ‘The Anopaia Path’, a tiny goat trail granting access to Greece around the gates. Undone, the bulk of the Greek army retreat, leaving only a handful of soldiers behind, chiefly Spartans - their King, Leonidas and his tiny regiment of career soldiers thought to number as little as 300. These men fight on, not for victory in battle but that their defiance will send a message. Indeed, even as Persian swords cut them down the story of the battle and the bravery at The Hot Gates spreads throughout the land, and with it, hope.

Version 1.4
A re-thinking of the original design - Three countries smaller - Minor changes to bonuses, connections and place names.
