The Great War, or WWI as it became known after 1939, remains one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Industrialization and the advent of mass production allowed new military technology to be readily available for combatants, and The Great War its testing ground.

On one side stood 'The Allied Powers', consisting of The United Kingdom, The Russian Empire, France and Italy against 'The Central Powers', represented by the The German Empire, The Ottoman Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire and The Kingdom of Bulgaria.

Warring chiefly took place in Europe where most countries had been swept up by the conflict, but by war's end a host of other nations also became involved, including The United States, India, Japan, Nepal, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with battlefronts reaching as far as Mesopotamia, Palestine and The Caucasus Mountains.

The Peloponnesian Wars
431-421 BC, Archidamian War. 415-413BC, Sicilian Expedition. 415-404BC, Ionian War.

Toward the end of the 5th Century BC an uneasy duality of power emerged between two former Greek allies: The Spartans and the Athenians. On one side there was muscle; Sparta's single minded armies were unchallengeable on land. On the other there was wealth; Athens' booming economy bought it naval supremacy.

This was the Athenian golden age and Sparta wasn't happy about it. The inception of Athenian democracy strained relations even more. Sparta’s oligarchy viewed this political experiment with deep suspicion.

During Persia’s invasions of Greece two leagues had been formed to unify its defence: The Athenian’s Delian League and the Spartan’s Peloponnesian League. Ironically Athens and Sparta now demanded their allegiance should war brake out placing one half of Greece on alert against the other.

Hostilities began when the far northern city of Corcyra requested Athens' aid against reprisal from its former ally the Peloponnesian League. So began two decades of bloody civil war that would engulf most of Greece and its many islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas, Persian forces from Asia Minor and even the far-flung Syracusans of Sicily.

Rules:
The U.S. 7th fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin may attack the North Vietnamese coastline, indicated by the arrows, but the coastline cannot attack back. The star represent the start of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The country at the start of the trail can attack the four countries in South Vietnam indicated by the arrows at the end of each branch of the trail. However, the countries in South Vietnam can not attack back. There is a demarcation line between North and South Vietnam. You can not attack over this line. Will the North Vietnamese honor this?

Story:
After the Japanese defeat in WWII, the Viet Minh, Communist forces within Vietnam, immediately set up a government in Vietnam. However, the French wanted their old colony back, and were unwilling to accept Vietnamese independence. The French were successful at pushing the Communist forces out of the southern half of Vietnam, but the Viet Minh soon retreated into the hills to regroup and began employing guerilla tactics against the French. In response, the French began a massive build-up of the fort at Dien Bien Phu. The Viet Minh surrounded the fort and laid siege for several months. Tired and badly outnumbered the French position was finally overrun in a decisive battle. The French pulled out of the region.

In accordance with the peace accords, Vietnam remained split at the 17th parallel. A Communist government was formed in the north, while a democratic one was formed in the south. Enter the United States, who opposed the Communist government in the north and supported the rabidly anti-Communist government of Ngo Dinh Diem, in the south. Diem began efforts to suppress all Communist activity, refused to allow elections, and outwardly opposed any unification under a Communist government.

The Viet Minh have once again been called into action as unrest has spread throughout the impoverished country. Now Communist agitators from the North, Vietcong, are infiltrating South Vietnam and regular North Vietnamese regiments are poised to intervene. The U.S. has signed a treaty with South Vietnam, pledging support. President Lyndon Johnson has ordered combat-ready troops into Vietnam. Stop the Vietcong and Viet Minh from taking control of South Vietnam! Indo-china must not fall to the Communists! Employ any force necessary!

By mid 9th century the Vikings had established settlements in numerous parts of the globe, including the British Isles, Scotland and Ireland. The passing of ‘Danelaw’ by the Viking warlord Guthrum formalized Danish claim to the territories and trade routes he’d conquered in Britain. Only Alfred the Great from Wessex persisted in a campaign to drive the Pagan Danes out. This dispute was interrupted though when a much greater threat materialized. Viking warlords Ivar the Boneless and Björn Ironside had arrived, and they’d brought a Great Heathen Army with them.

Meanwhile across the English Channel the late Carolingian King’s three sons Charles, Louis and Lothair I had let disputes over their royal inheritance develop into civil war. When Charles and Louis emerged eventual victors they absorbed their defeated sibling’s territories into their own: Louis’s Eastern Frankish Kingdom and Charles’s Western Frankish Kingdom. But neither Kingdom was able to properly defend against ever more frequent attacks by Vikings; bit by bit they were losing the very territory and wealth they had fought each other to acquire.

Charles's woes deepened when the legendary Viking King Ragnar Lodbrok and a fleet of 6000 men set sail for Paris, forcing him to pay a massive ransom to prevent the city from being wholly destroyed.

As desperation set in the two Frankish Kings looked for new allegiances. Charles the Bald and Alfred the Great agreed to work as one while Louis the German aligned himself with the powerful kingdoms under Danelaw.

But would these measures be enough to curb the tide of Vikings or was Scandinavia about to get a whole lot bigger?

At the start of the 12th century a brilliant military leader called Borjigin Temüjin united the nomadic tribes of Mongolia and proclaimed himself Genghis Khan; The Supreme Ruler of Mongolia.

By the time of his death some 20 years later the Mongol Empire stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Sea of Japan; or most of modern day China and Central Asia. It grew larger still in the century and a half that followed, finally becoming the most expansive empire ever to exist, with borders in Siberia, Europe, Arabia, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. No army could better the Mongol’s military tactics, sophisticated weaponry and relentless savagery; The Mongols didn’t just overthrow empires, they obliterated them. Fear would prove as potent a weapon as any sword or arrow. It emptied towns and brought kings to their knees.

The empire faced a problem from within though. The unity Genghis cultivated between Mongol clans was rapidly eroding under the rule of his descendents, The Khanates. These sons and grandsons of Genghis had each inherited a portion of the empire’s frontier: The Il-Khanate saw over the Middle East, The Golden Horde had Russia, Ukraine and the Caucasus and the Chagatai Khanate ruled Central Asia.

Their constant rivalry and refusal to accept the legitimacy of the new Great Khan led to political chaos and bloody civil wars, just as the Mongols faced ever-greater resistance to their ongoing conquests - famously at Ain Jalut, 1260 against the wily Mumluks of Egypt, renown for also smashing the crusaders, and then against Đại Việt (Vietnam), who quashed all three Mongolian invasions, ending at the Battle of Bạch Đằng, 1287 where the entire Mongol navy was drowned. Meanwhile Hindustan (India) not only resisted Mongol invasions but also embarked on incursions of their own into Mongol territory.

It would take much longer for the shattered remnants of the Novgorod Republic (Russia), Rus’ (Scandinavia) and the timid Byzantines to defy the Mongols, but eventually they found the nerve too.

Could the Khanates have ever unified and overthrown The Great Khan, or were their divisions too deep and The Great Khan too powerful? The population of the United States is steadily spreading westward into new frontier, searching for prosperity. By 1854, the territory of Kansas is ready to enter the union, and the country is once again thrown into the slavery debate.

The South wants to allow for the extension of slavery into the West. The North wants to contain slavery to where it exists. The abolitionists wanted to end slavery altogether. In an attempt to find a compromise, Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas pushes an act through Congress that says, in Kansas, the issue will be decided by a vote. The act is met with outrage in the North, where the abolitionist wing is growing stronger. Immediately, activists from each wing flood into Kansas to influence the vote; it isn't long before violence erupts. Pushing the country ever closer to all-out Civil War just before the Presidential election of 1860. The country is badly divided. Due to the split in the Democratic Party, the newly formed Republican Party wins the White House with their leader, Abraham Lincoln. In protest, the southern states secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America.

It is April 1861, Confederate forces have surrounded the Union outpost, Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor and demanded it's surrender. Lincoln has called for troops. Story:
The French have been expelled from the New World, giving England dominance over the continent; however, that dominance has come at a steep cost. England is now bankrupt and in dire need of funds. The British Parliament has levied a series of taxes on the colonists in order to replenish the badly depleted treasury.

Revolts and protests erupted throughout the colonies. The colonists, with a rally call of "no taxation without representation," boycotted British goods and attacked British loyalists. The English tried desperately to keep the American colonies under their thumb by sending troops to Boston. There, tensions ran high, and eventually came to a head where British troops fired into a crowd of taunting Americans.

This bloodshed sent shockwaves throughout the country. Now more than ever, American colonists came to see England as an enemy nation. In response, the English have begun to mobilize. British General Gage has been sent to Concord to seize munitions, but is intercepted in the small town of Lexington by American minutemen. The American Revolution has begun! President Madison has had enough! For the first time in the new nation's history, it has declared war on a foreign power, the mighty British Empire.

As a student and lover of History it pains me to have to omit Andrew Jacksons' magnificent victory at New Orleans, but in favor of room and gameplay I had to sacrifice it. The battle actually had little effect on the war as a whole, having occurred after the Treaty of Ghent was already signed.
