Mayan City-states

The year is 600 A.D., and dozens of autonomous city-states have sprung up across the Yucatan peninsula. Two super-powers, Tikal in the crowded Petén Basin, and Calakmul in the central lowlands, are fighting to rule over all of Mayans. But they are surrounded by other, smaller powers who are determined to exert their influence. To the West, there is Pelenque, who holds the gate way to the Teotlihuacan heartland in central mexico. Uxmal and Chichen Itza have alied themselves to control the North-west. Cobá uses it's control of the port cities of Tulum and Xcaret to gain a foot hold in the North-east. And in the southern highlands, the minor powers of Yaxchilan and Copan have been forced into an alliance of convenience, in an attempt to keep control over the jade and obsidian rich mountain trade routes.

Who will unite all of the Mayans under one ruler? You decide!

Notes on game-play:
As impressive as the Mayan's technology was, they were never very good at governing areas larger than the city-state. So there are no "continents" in the usual sense. But, of course, some city-states were stronger than others. The major powers, Calakmul, Tikal, Palenque, Coba, Copán and Uxmal, are given a gold boarder and start off with a bonus of two or three. The minor powers, Edzna, Zaculeu, Kaminaljuryu, Chichen Itza, Uaxactun, Dzibanche and Yaxchilan, are indicated by light green boarders and start with a bonus of one.

One historical note: To the best of our knowledge, the minor powers of Yaxchilan and Copan were never really allies. But combining them makes for an interesting 6th player in the starting scenario.
