Since the formation of the state of Kuwait by the British in 1899, Iraq has claimed that the territory belongs to them. Due to Western protection, Iraq has not acted on its demands to be re-assimilated with the oil rich Kuwait. Even after Kuwait allied with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, Iraq still disputed the legality and right for Kuwait to exist. Now, Iraqi forces have invaded and conquered the neighboring country of Kuwait under the auspices of a territorial dispute and that Kuwait's overproduction of petroleum has been hurting Iraq's economy. The UN has condemned the aggressive action and imposed a series of economic sanctions against Iraq. Saddam Hussein, dictator of Iraq, has shrugged off these weak efforts to subdue him. Now the United States thinks that Iraq is seeking to develop nuclear and biological weapons. Pressure has been stepped up on the Hussein regime. U.S. President Bush and the U.N. have demanded that Iraq pullout of Kuwait and that Saddam and his sons must leave Iraq within 48 hours or suffer "serious consequences."
